Baptism is a sacrament in the United Church of Canada. We use water as a symbol of new life, signifying acceptance and marking the beginning of the journey in a church community.
FAQ’S
Who can be baptized?
Our denomination offers baptism to all ages, from infants to adults.
When does this happen?
A baptism usually takes place as part of a regular Sunday worship service. That way, the whole congregation celebrates with you and pledges support. Alternatively, a private ceremony can be requested.
Do you have to be baptized to be part of the church?
No. Baptism is not a requirement for God's love. You will always be welcome at Southampton United Church, regardless of whether, or not, you’ve been baptised.
If I move to a new church in the future, do I need to be baptized again?
No. Baptism in the United Church is recognized by all Christian denominations practising infant baptism.
We will work with you to create a service that reflects your loved one’s unique spirit. We believe everyone’s life should be celebrated.
FAQ’S
How will the church and the minister help me through the process?
The minister will meet with you to discuss how best to celebrate your loved one’s life. An initial meeting will take place in your home and lasts about an hour. Follow-up communication helps ensure the wishes of the family and the deceased are met.
Do you need to be a member of Southampton United Church?
No. You don’t need to be associated with Southampton United Church to have your funeral or memorial service here. We provide funerals for members of other religions or for people with no religious affiliation.
Do we need to do it in the church?
No. While our sanctuary is available and appropriate for funerals/ memorial, our minister offers services at other locations upon request. Funeral homes, cemeteries or sites for the scattering of ashes have become common sites for rituals.
Can we do this in different parts?
Yes. Funeral rites have changed. You might choose to have a funeral service, a wake, a graveside burial, a scattering of ashes or a memorial service. These can occur in any order.
How is music provided?
We encourage you to select music that is meaningful to you. Our music director is skilled on both the piano and the organ. Vocalists and/or choir can be arranged. Pre-recorded music is an option.
